Kalulu the Hare
Kalulu the hare is the foremost trickster of Chewa, Tumbuka and Yao storytelling in Malawi and Zambia: the small, weak animal who outwits hyena, lion and elephant by cunning, collected by Rattray in Chinyanja as early as 1907. In Tumbuka tales he is the clever manipulator whom only the tortoise's wisdom can defeat; his stories teach that intelligence prevails over brute strength.
