The Kanaga Spirits
The kanaga is the great wooden mask of the Dogon of Mali, danced during the dama, the funeral rite that escorts the soul of the deceased from the village of the living to the ancestral realm. Worn with black, red, and white geometric patterns, the kanaga dancer evokes the hand of the creator god Amma and the order of the cosmos, central to Dogon mortuary tradition.
