Kan'du Fureytha (Ocean Demon of Fuvahmulah)
Kan'du Fureytha (Ocean Demon) is a malevolent sea spirit from the folklore of Fuvahmulah, the southernmost atoll of the Maldives. According to local legend, this demon emerged from the ocean as a 'pale, large flame looming over the rocks,' terrifying the islanders of Fuvahmulah. It would drag people into the sea, drowning them, and was blamed for numerous disappearances of fishermen and swimmers. The terrified islanders sought help from Edhurutakkaange Mohamed Didi, a renowned fanditha veriyaa (sorcerer) of exceptional power. Despite working his magic for many days at the reef where the demon
