Karakondzho is the Bulgarian variant of the Balkan Christmas demon, closely related to the Greek Kallikantzaros and the Turkish Karakoncolos. This malevolent creature is a prominent figure in Bulgarian folklore, appearing during the twelve days of Christmas, from December 25 to January 6, a period known as the Mryasni Dni or "Dirty Days" when supernatural forces are believed to roam freely. According to tradition, the Karakondzho dwells underground for the rest of the year but emerges during the Christmas season to torment humans, entering homes and causing chaos.
