Kataragama Deviyo is one of the four guardian deities of Sri Lanka and the patron deity of the Kataragama shrine, one of the island's most important multi-religious pilgrimage sites. He is identified with the Hindu god Murugan (Skanda/Kartikeya), the war god and son of Shiva, but in the Sinhalese Buddhist context, he is revered as a powerful guardian deity.
