Kaugjagjuk

trickster · Canada · North America

Kaugjagjuk (also Kaujjarjuk) is a central Inuit legend: a mistreated orphan boy, kicked and humiliated by his community, is taken up by the Moon Man, who rescues him and brings him to the moon, where he becomes a protector of the abused. The tale, documented among Inuit communities and retold in collections of Inuit stories, is not a trickster tale; the prankster framing is corrected here.
