Kibawa

spirit · Democratic Republic of the Congo · Central Africa

Kibawa is a great earth spirit worshipped by some Tabwa and eastern Luba peoples of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Devotion to Kibawa centers on spiritual possession as a means of personal salvation: adepts are possessed by the spirit and receive supernatural guidance and support. They are required to reject nontraditional cultural imports such as Swahili, the language of colonial missionaries and coastal traders. Ritual instruments associated with the cult include rattles and colorful beaded headdresses decorated with geometric designs and fringed with fur or feathers.
