Kilibob

hero · Papua New Guinea · Pacific

Kilibob is a mythical culture hero from northeastern Papua New Guinea whose canoe journey along the northern coast created islands and bestowed gifts upon humanity. He traveled by canoe, creating islands as he went and giving the people fishing nets, canoes, and knowledge of navigation. His travels explain the cultural diversity of Papua New Guinea's coastal peoples, as wherever he landed he left behind different languages and customs. Kilibob and his brother Manup eventually became rivals, and their conflict is said to have created the distinct identities of different language groups. Kilibob
