The Warimu (singular: Mrimu) are the mountain spirits of Kilimanjaro in Chaga mythology, ancient guardians inhabiting sacred groves (mshitu) on the mountain's slopes. According to tradition, the Warimu were the original inhabitants of Kilimanjaro before the Chaga arrived. They dwell in patches of virgin forest never cut or farmed, where trees are never felled and animals never hunted. Only initiated elders may enter.
