Kindoki

spirit · Democratic Republic of the Congo · Central Africa

Kindoki is the complex concept of spiritual power in Kongo belief, referring to the occult force used for either healing or harm. A person with kindoki (called a ndoki) possesses a special intelligence that surpasses ordinary understanding. Kindoki is not inherently evil -- it is a neutral power depending on the user's intentions. Benevolent kindoki is exercised by nganga (spiritual healers) who diagnose illness and combat evil. Malevolent kindoki is wielded by witches who use their power for selfish ends. The concept is intimately connected with nkisi (sacred power objects) and Simbi spirits.
