Kinoly

ghost · Madagascar · East Africa

Kinoly is a malevolent ghost of Malagasy belief, a variety of the angatra class of the dead. Described with red eyes and extraordinarily long fingernails, it kills by a single touch and tears open its victims. Kinoly haunt sites of violence and death; their stories were recorded in nineteenth-century sources such as The Antananarivo Annual, where they rank among the terrors of the Malagasy night.
