Korkyt is the legendary founding father of Kazakh music, a revered sage, composer, poet, and philosopher who is credited with creating the kobyz, an ancient Kazakh stringed instrument, as well as the dombra, the national instrument of Kazakhstan. According to tradition, Korkyt lived for three hundred years, traveling the world to escape death and sharing his wisdom with all who would listen. He is considered the first baksy or shaman-musician, whose kobyz playing had the power to heal the sick, drive away evil spirits, and communicate with the spirit world.
