The Kraken is a legendary colossal sea monster said to dwell off the coasts of Norway and Greenland. Described as a giant octopus or squid-like creature, the Kraken was feared by Norwegian fishermen for its ability to drag entire ships and crews to the ocean depths. First described in detail by Norwegian Bishop Erik Pontoppidan in his work The Natural History of Norway (1753), who portrayed the Kraken as an enormous floating island-like creature with massive tentacles.
