Kujur

guardian · Sudan · East Africa

Among the Nuba of the Nuba Mountains, a kujur is a man or woman whose power is granted by God and through whom the Nuba know God. The kujur is the most sacred person, able to bring prosperity and lift suffering after natural crisis; each Nuba tribe has one, and ritual performance differs from tribe to tribe. A council of kujurs appoints the supreme Kujur, the Tabowake, who calls the community to prepare for rain and directs agricultural work.
