La Sayona is a vengeful female specter from the folklore of Venezuela and Colombia, particularly from the Llanos (plains) region shared by both countries. According to the most popular version of the legend, La Sayona was once a beautiful woman named Casilda who lived in the colonial era. Blinded by jealousy after being told by a rejected suitor that her husband Severiano was having an affair with her own mother, Casilda murdered her husband and infant son by burning their house down, then attacked her mother with a machete.
