Landvættir
Landvættir (land wights) are the four guardian spirits of Iceland described in Snorri Sturluson's Heimskringla. Each guardian protects one quarter of Iceland's coast: a dragon (gríðungur) guards the east, a giant eagle or griffin (gammur) guards the north, a bull (griðungur) guards the west, and a rock giant (bergrisi) guards the south. According to the legend, King Harald Gormsson of Denmark sent a wizard in whale-form to scout Iceland for invasion. The wizard tried to land on each coast but was driven away by the four landvættir — the dragon breathed fire, the eagle tore at his eyes, the bul
