Landvättir

spirit · Sweden · Nordic

Landvættir are tutelary spirits of specific places in Old Norse and Icelandic tradition, not Swedish. They appear in Landnámabók and Heimskringla as guardians of Iceland's quarters (dragon, eagle, bull, giant) and spirits of hills, stones, and waterfalls propitiated with offerings. The Swedish equivalent is landvättar or rå, but landvættir and its detailed lore are distinctly Icelandic/Old Norse.
