Leopard Spirit

spirit · Cameroon · Central Africa

The 'Leopard Spirit' in Cameroon reflects the historical Leopard Society (Anyoto, Vihokohoko) — secret societies active c. 1890–1940s whose members wore leopard-skin regalia to simulate leopard attacks, often as political resistance against slave traders and colonial rule. Members did not believe they became actual leopards.
