Liongo Fumo
Liongo Fumo (also known as Fumo Liyongo) is the national hero of the Swahili people -- a legendary warrior, poet, and prince who lived on Pate Island (Lamu Archipelago) sometime between the 9th and 13th centuries. A giant of a man, nearly invulnerable except for his navel, a master archer whose bow no other man could draw, and a poet of such skill that his compositions survive as the oldest known Swahili literature. Though the rightful heir, his brother Mringwari usurped the throne, forcing Liongo into exile. He became a heroic outlaw, composing poems and songs still sung at weddings and gungu
