Lohiau was a handsome chief of Kauai loved by the volcano goddess Pele. When Pele saw Lohiau in a dream, she fell deeply in love. She sent her sister Hi'iaka to retrieve him. By the time Hi'iaka arrived, Lohiau had died of grief and heartbreak over Pele's absence. Hi'iaka spent thirty days chanting over his bones, successfully reviving him. The jealous Pele, suspicious of Hi'iaka's long absence, destroyed Hi'iaka's lehua groves, prompting Hi'iaka to embrace Lohiau defiantly at Kilauea's crater.
