Louhi

witch · Finland · Nordic

Louhi is the powerful mistress of Pohjola in the Kalevala, a sorceress who steals the Sun, Moon, and Fire, and commissions the forging of the Sampo. She battles Väinämöinen, Ilmarinen, and Lemminkäinen, transforming into a giant eagle in the final pursuit. Lönnrot compiled her from Karelian runic songs where she appears as a shamanic antagonist.
