Lulik Spirits
Lulik is a fundamental spiritual concept in East Timorese cosmology, referring to a potent sacred force that animates the environment and concentrates in specific sites, objects, and persons. Lulik spirits inhabit sacred mountains (foho lulik), waters (bee lulik), lands (rai lulik), and are housed in sacred houses (uma lulik). This animating potency is not inherently good or evil but is transgressive and dangerous. It sustains life yet requires strict prohibitions and rituals to be approached safely.
