Lupo Mannaro

werewolf · Italy · Mediterranean

Il lupo mannaro is the Italian werewolf, a person cursed or voluntarily transformed into a wolf to hunt humans, attested since antiquity as lupus hominarius and versipellis ('skin-changer'). Folk tradition distinguished induced, voluntary, and spontaneous lycanthropy, with regional names like lupo menaro and lupunaru. In Basilicata, children born on Christmas night were said to become wolves.
