Lussi
Lussi is a female demon-like figure in Norwegian folklore active on Lussinatten (St. Lucy's Night, December 13), one of the shortest days of the year in the old Julian calendar. On this night, Lussi rides through the air with a host of spirits and demons, punishing anyone who dared to work after dark. All spinning wheels and looms had to be still. Anyone caught working risked being swept up by Lussi's procession or having their work ruined. In Vestlandet, the Lussinatten tradition was particularly strong — no mill could operate, no wool could be spun, and no bread could be baked after sunset.
