Luus Spirits

spirit · Russia · Central Asia

Luus are the dragon-like water spirits of Buryat tradition, serpentine beings with water-shimmering scales, deer-like horns, and glowing green eyes, sometimes appearing as whirlpools or mist. Territorial and mercurial, they may be generous with fish or wrathful with storms, and must be approached with proper ritual. Their veneration reflects the importance of Lake Baikal and its watershed.
