Māui

spirit · New Zealand · Pacific

Māui is the supreme trickster and culture hero of the Māori, a demigod who slowed the sun, fished up the North Island, stole fire from Mahuika, and attempted to conquer death by passing through Hine-nui-te-pō. Shape-shifting and supernaturally strong, he used wit and daring to better the world for humans, becoming the pattern of the Polynesian culture hero.
