Ma'i
Ma'i is the Samoan spirit of sickness and epidemic: in traditional belief, illness is often inflicted by aitu spirits or by sorcery, and the ma'i is the disease-spirit itself. Such afflictions are understood to punish social or ritual transgression and to be relieved through appeasement, ritual, and the intervention of specialists, linking health to moral and spiritual order.
