Maka

deity · United States · North America

Maka is the Earth goddess of Lakota tradition, created from the blood of Inyan, the primordial rock spirit, who sacrificed himself so that she might exist. She is the feminine principle of stability, fertility, and nurture, mother of all life upon her body; when she tried to part from Inyan, the judge Skan bound her to the rocks, which is why rock and soil remain joined.
