The supreme creator god of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) mythology. Makemake shaped the world, created the birds, fish, and people, then withdrew to watch over them from the heavens. He is the chief deity of the Tangata Manu (Birdman) cult, which centered at the ceremonial village of Orongo. According to tradition, Makemake gave the Rapa Nui people the Manutara (sooty tern) eggs and established the annual competition that determined the Birdman of the year.
