Malmkarlen (the ore man) is a male mining spirit in Swedish folklore, the counterpart to the female Gruvrået. He appears as a small, gray-clad miner with a leather apron and a mining lamp on his cap. Malmkarlen dwells in the deepest shafts and most dangerous passages of iron and copper mines in Bergslagen. Unlike the omen-bringing Gruvrået, Malmkarlen is known for actively helping miners — he knocks on the rock walls to warn of impending cave-ins, leads miners to rich ore veins by tapping his pick, and lights his lamp in places where methane gas has accumulated.
