Åmand
Åmanden (the River Man) is a Danish male water spirit who rules a specific river stretch and demands an annual human sacrifice. Unlike Nøkken, who lures individuals, the Åmand has a contractual demand: one person per year must drown in his waters, and he calls for his victim on a specific night. His most famous cry echoes through Danish folklore: 'Tiden er kommet, men manden ikke!' ('The time has come, but the man has not!'). In Odense Å, this cry was heard every year at the same hour, and someone always drowned within days. At Vasegård on Bornholm in the 1850s, a man hid from the Åmand's call
