Mare (Germanic)
The Mare (Old High German mara, Old Norse mara, Old English mære) is a female nightmare spirit in Germanic and Slavic folklore. She 'rides' sleepers' chests, causing suffocation, sleep paralysis, and nightmares — the word 'nightmare' derives from her (Old English nihtmare, 'mare-ride').
