Marjatta

human · Finland · Nordic

Marjatta is the virgin maiden of Kalevala (runo 50) who conceives a son after eating a lingonberry. Her child is presented to Väinämöinen; when he orders the infant killed, the babe speaks and is crowned King of Karelia. Her story, compiled by Lönnrot from Karelian runic songs, marks the Christianized conclusion of the epic, a Marian nativity parallel.
