Marmennil (Marmennilin) is a mischievous merman from Faroese folklore who lives at the bottom of the sea near Elduvík on Eysturoy. Smaller than a human with abnormally long fingers, he delights in teasing fishermen by biting bait off hooks and snagging lines to the seabed. The most famous legend tells of farmer Anfinn (Andfind Jacobsen, born c. 1575), who accidentally hooked Marmennil's hand while fishing and pulled him into the boat.
