Marraco

dragon · Spain · Mediterranean

El Marraco is the dragon of Lleida in Catalan folklore, depicted as a wingless green dragon with sharp claws and, in older accounts, linked to the ancient Ilergetes, whose chieftains were said to descend from a dragon deity. Today it appears in the city's festive processions (bestiari), preserving a folk memory of pre-Roman Iberian belief within Catholic celebration.
