Masca

ogre · Italy · Mediterranean

Masche are the witches of Piedmontese tradition, women who inherited supernatural powers across generations, able to change into animals, fly, and cast spells. Distinct from Sardinian or Neapolitan witchcraft, their power was held to come from nature rather than the devil. Feared but also consulted for healing, they are remembered in a major festival at Rifreddo.
