Matsyendranath (Karunamaya)
Matsyendranath, also known as Karunamaya ('the compassionate one') and Red Machindranath, is one of the most important deities in Nepali Buddhism and Hinduism, revered as the god of rain and compassion. The central legend tells of a devastating 12-year drought that struck the Kathmandu Valley, caused by the demon Bhasmasura (or Bhasmasur). The powerful yogi Gorakhnath had captured all the nagas (serpent gods) in meditation, blocking the rainfall. The people, led by the king of Bhadgaon, traveled to Assam to seek help from Matsyendranath, Gorakhnath's guru. When Matsyendranath arrived in the va
