Matuku
Matuku-tangotango is the giant man-eating bird of Māori tradition, a monstrous owl-like creature who swallowed the ancestress Whaitiri and devoured travellers. The hero Tāwhaki slew him and cut open his belly to free his relatives. The name matuku also denotes the bittern, and the ogre's image blends the fearsome night-bird with the taniwha-like predators of old.
