In Hawaiian tradition, Māui is the trickster demigod and culture hero who fished up the islands with his enchanted fishhook (the constellation Māui's Fishhook), snared the sun to lengthen the day, and drew fire from the depths. The youngest and cleverest of brothers, he used cunning rather than strength to aid humanity, and his exploits explain the shape of land and sky.
