Maui
In Māori tradition, Māui is the great demigod and trickster who fished up Te Ika-a-Māui, the North Island, from the sea with a hook made from the jawbone of his grandmother Murirangawhenua, his canoe becoming Te Waka a Māui, the South Island. He slowed the sun, stole fire from Mahuika, and sought immortality from Hine-nui-te-pō, shaping the human condition.
