Mawu is the supreme creator goddess of the Fon (Dahomey) and Ewe peoples of Benin and Togo. She is the goddess of the moon, night, fertility, and motherhood. Often paired with Lisa, the sun god, they form the dual-sexed creator deity Mawu-Lisa. Mawu created the cosmos, the earth, and humanity. According to Fon cosmology, she created the world while carried on the back of Aido Hwedo, the rainbow serpent, whose winding movements formed the mountains and valleys.
