Mazimu
Mazimu are ancestral spirits of the Tumbuka people (Malawi, eastern Zambia, Tanzania). They dwell near family graves, monitoring descendants, offering protection or punishment. Elders propitiate them with beer libations at the m'sinda shrine. Term from Tumbuka -zimu (spirit/ancestor). Documented in missionary ethnographies (Rangeley) and oral tradition.
