Mbidi Kiluwe is the legendary culture hero and founding father of Luba sacred kingship (bulopwe). According to Luba oral tradition, Mbidi Kiluwe was a mysterious prince from the east, distinguished by his refined, dignified manners. He arrived at the court of King Nkongolo Mwamba, the crude and violent red-skinned ruler. Where Nkongolo was barbaric, Mbidi Kiluwe was gentle and wise. He introduced civilizing customs: eating in private, using utensils, speaking softly, covering one's face with dignity. Mbidi Kiluwe married Nkongolo's sister Bulanda, but was forced to flee when Nkongolo's tyranny
