Mbori

supreme-deity · Central African Republic · Central Africa

Mbori is the supreme being of the Zande peoples of the Central African Republic, South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Zande belief holds that the souls of the dead become ghosts, which inhabit earth caverns in the bush; Mbori also dwells there and partakes of their ghostly nature. In Nzakara-speaking areas the supreme being is called Zagi, a term that also denotes the outside universe. Under missionary influence Mbori has become almost universally identified with the Christian God, while ghosts once regarded as benevolent ancestors are increasingly associated with evil.
