Menehune
The Menehune are the legendary dwarf builders of Hawaiʻi, said to have raised temples (heiau), fishponds, roads, and canoes in a single night, working only in darkness and vanishing at dawn if unfinished. The 1820 census of Kauaʻi listed 65 of them. Scholars debate whether they remember earlier settlers (manahune, 'commoners') or are a post-contact invention, but their craftwork lore endures.
