Mishipeshu
Mishipeshu, the Great Lynx or Underwater Panther, is one of the most powerful water beings in Ojibwe and Anishinaabe mythology. It has the head and paws of a giant cat but is covered in scales with dagger-like spikes along its back and tail. It rules the depths of Lake Superior from its home on Michipicoten Island and is master of all water creatures, including snakes. Mishipeshu can cause storms that capsize canoes and is feared as a cause of drownings. It is the eternal opponent of the Thunderbirds and is said to guard vast deposits of copper in the Great Lakes
