Moddey Dhoo
The Moddey Dhoo, 'black dog' in Manx, is the phantom hound said to haunt Peel Castle on St Patrick's Isle. The legend rests chiefly on the account of the English topographer George Waldron, who recorded it in his Description of the Isle of Man (1731) under the phonetic form 'Mauthe Doog'. The dog was seen nightly in the castle rooms, above all in the guard chamber, and its appearances were long counted an omen of death.
