Modimo
Modimo is the supreme deity of the Sotho-Tswana people, the creator of all things, source of life, and controller of destiny. Intangible and all-pervasive, Modimo is addressed by praise names including Mme (Mother) and Lesedi (Light), but also Selo (Monster) for dangerous powers beyond human comprehension. Modimo governs the elements, sending lightning, thunder, rain, or drought. However, Modimo is distant from daily human affairs, and the Tswana approach through the Badimo (ancestors) who act as intermediaries. The Tswana say 'Motho ke modimo' (Man is modimo), expressing the profound intercon
