Mong

spirit · United States · North America

Not independently attested as a spirit of Hopi folklore. No source records a forest spirit named 'Mong' with possession powers. The name almost certainly garbles Mongwa, the Hopi Great Horned Owl katsina, a warrior katsina who disciplines clowns at summer day dances and warns the village to mend its ways. The recorded traits appear to derive from modern speculation.
