Moon Maiden (Cherokee)
Not independently attested as a 'moon maiden' nature-spirit of Cherokee folklore. Genuine Cherokee tradition treats the Moon (nvdo svnoyi ehi, 'night dweller') as the celestial brother of the female Sun; he is addressed as a woman, Age'yaguga, in sacred formulas, and a giant toad, Walosi, is said to swallow him during eclipses. The forest-spirit traits recorded appear to be modern invention.
